It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas James Hill, 95, of Lunenburg, announce his passing on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Mahone Nursing Home, Mahone Bay.

Born in Toronto, Doug was a son of the late Harry and Emma (Verian) Hill.

Doug started his working career at an early age working in the office of a fish plant in Ingonish and then came to Halifax where he worked in the office for William Stairs, Son and Morrow a wholesale distributor.

Doug went on to business college where he obtained his book-keeping course and continued his career as an accountant in the Office of A.J. Hamilton Insurance Brokers, Confederation Life as a Group Life Insurance Agent and later owning Insurance Consultants Services, Dartmouth, retiring after 16 years in business. After retirement he moved to Lunenburg where he helped at Lunenburg Hardware, a family business owned by his son-in-law and daughter.

Active within the Town of Lunenburg, Doug was a Director with the Lunenburg Board of Trade, the Academy Foundation and Heritage Society. Doug has enjoyed for over 30 years, square dancing and has travelled extensively seeing the area camping in his RV.

Doug is survived by his wife, Sharon, son; Arthur (Regis), Dartmouth; Ronald (Lorraine), Dartmouth; Norman (Sarah), Dartmouth; daughters, Linda (Peter) Marinus, Courtney, BC.; Margaret (William) Towndrow, Northwest; step-children, Andrew Findlay, London, ON.; Krista (Todd) Mayo, Lunenburg; Jennifer (Paul) Saunders, Lunenburg; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by first wife, Audrie in Jan. 2005, and his brother, Richard in 2013.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway 3, Lunenburg and from where a gathering to celebrate Doug’s life will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024, at 1 p.m. Private family interment to follow in Martin’s Brook Cemetery, Martin’s Brook.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lunenburg Academy Foundation or the Lunenburg Heritage Society, would be appreciated by the family.
